Statewide Disability Camp concluded at Soreng

Soreng, March 2(IPR): As a part of the Statewide disability camp, the Department of Women and Child Development (W&CD) in collaboration with the Panchayat, District Collector, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Rural Management and Disaster, Social Justice and Welfare organised a day long camp for Identification, Screening, Assessment and UDID Enrolment for Children with Special Needs (CwSN) and Persons with Disabilities (PwDS) at Soreng Community Health Centre premises, today.

The main objective of the camp is to identify and screen PwDs, CwSN, disabled School children, dropped out students or those receiving Home Based Education and to determine their disability percentage by Specialist Medical personnel along with the provision of disability certificate and UDID (Card) to those identified individual, to recommend for further assessment of the PwDs and based on the assessment findings provide them the needed assistance including those children who require special education especially in mainstream school along with providing them with the required financial assistance under the different State Schemes/provisions.

The program was overseen by the Joint Commissioner (W&CD), Dr. M.B Chettri, Assistant Commissioner (W&CD), P.N Pradhan along with Special Educators and Resource Teachers from the associate departments.

Speaking to the IPR, Dr. Chettri said that in order to make aware about the types and classification of diasbilities and to properly disseminate information regarding availed State Facilities, such camps play a vital role. He also added that Resource Teachers and Educators play an important role in ensuring inclusivity for CwSN and a better education environment in schools. This camp is a step towards the holistic development of those important section of our society who are otherwise marginalized, he quoted. He also expressed his sincere gratitude towards the associate departments of including the Panchayats for their relentless support and active participation.

The phase-wise camp had commenced from February 22nd at Mangan District Hospital accordingly followed by Gangtok, Singtam, Pakyong, Namchi, Jorethang, Gyalshing while being concluded at Soreng.
