Sikkim playing Santosh Trophy; A 22 member Senior Women’s Football state team is also participating in the Senior Women’s National Football Championship 2021-22

Sikkim Review                                                           

Gangtok, Nov 21:

A 20 member football team from Sikkim is playing in 75th Hero National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy 2021-22 East Zone Qualifying Round to be held from today at Kalyani, West Bengal. It will end on 3rd December.  Sikkim will play its first match against Chattishgarh on 23rd November. Sikkim football team left on 8th November to participate in the tournament.

Similarly, a 22 member Senior Women’s Football state team is also participating in the Senior Women’s National Football Championship 2021-22 which is being played in Kerala from November 25 to December 9. Sikkim will play its first match on 29th November against Jammu and Kashmir, following that on 1st December against Arunachal Pradesh, on 3rd December against Maharashtra after that second round will start.

Jersey for both the team is being sponsored by none other than face of Indian Football Bhaichung Bhutia who is also Advisor to Sikkim Football Association who was also present today during the presser addressed by SFA

In the preliminary round, Sikkim is being placed in Group “B” with Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. Sikkim team will play its first match on 23 Nov against Chhattisgarh and another match against West Bengal on 25 Nov. All India Football Federation after a gap of two years owing to COVID-19 pandemic.

Phurba Sherpa, Chief Coordinator Sikkim Football Association informed “It is informed that as a special case owing to the pandemic which prevailed for almost two years, a 45-days long coaching camp was conducted at Jorethang Public Ground under AFC “A” License Chief Coach Suren Chettri and was assisted by Assistant Coach-cum-Manager Allen Bhutia and Physiotherapist Prem Bahadur Chettri.”

The state team first left for Bhubaneshwar, Odisha on 8th November  where they played three friendly matches with India U-19 team, get themselves acclimatized before proceeding to Kalyani, West Bengal to participate in the Santosh Trophy competition informed Sherpa

The 20-member team is led by Kilp Namgyal Barfungpa as the team captain and other team members are Pintso Lepcha, Basil Limboo, Urbanus Thatal, Milan Chettri, Bibek Bhutia, Kintop Ongpo Lachungpa, Bipin Bhattarai, Sagar Gurung, Aman Rasaily, Nimdup Lepcha, Boxer Pradhan, Dawa Lhendup Sherpa, Eric Yonzon, Don Tshering Lepcha, Abishek Rai, Bir Bahadur Pradhan, Dawa T Lepcha, Tempa Lendup Bhutia and Bhaichung Bhutia.

Bhaichung Bhutia shared league matches are very much important on top of it Santosh Trophy is launching pad for any footballer from where they got opportunities to play nation and other tourneys so this time we have conducted good trial and selection camp. This is only not enough but after these also state needs to conduct more state league matches to create players. At present Manipur is leading in terms of creating footballer as they are creating more than 30 footballers for ISL but Sikkim is only able to produce 7 ISL players. Bhaichung Bhutia thanked SILCO for Jersey and Victor X for sponsoring Jersey and Football for last three years.
