Omicron scare: authority checking compulsory mask in high alert

In the wake of reports that Omicron, the fast-spreading variant of Coronavirus has entered India, Sikkim government also tighten its mask rule and as many as 80 people have been challaned by Sadar police station for not wearing face mask in public under Regulation of 4 of Sikkim Public Health and Safety (Covid 19) Regulations 2021 in last 6 days as per the police report. Ever since the fear of new Covid -19 variant Omicron has loomed, the authority has tightened up their securities and more vigilant they have become. 

Meanwhile, as fears around Omicron rise, Sikkim has been witnessing a slight uptick in new Covid cases. In cold weather conditions, viruses tend to thrive. Moreover, Sikkim has been observing an outbreak in jail and school. Number of cases has also risen as earlier daily 2 -3  cases are being reported but in the last two days Sikkim saw 18 and 8 cases after 75 new cases of Covid -19 a few days ago which was also the highest single day spike in this so called third phase or in last three month.

State government has already barred foreign tourist entry in Sikkim and also issued a notification saying that there will be no issuance of Inner Line permit (ILP) from 01 Dec to 15 Dec 2021. This decision was taken as a containment measure.

Also today high level meeting chaired by CM Prem Singh Tamang also decided to postpone Sikkim Global Film festival which was slated to be held from 10th to 14th December
