The Labour Department, Government of Sikkim has started the process of registration of individual labourers/workers as well as those working in organized and unorganised sectors in the State. The registration process commenced today at C.S. Rai Government Secondary School, Arithang here in the capital. After the passing of Sikkim Labour (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Bill, 2021 by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly during the recent Budget Session, the Labour Department has expedited the process to start registration throughout the State. It may be reminded that a Task Force has been constituted in each Municipality Ward and each Panchayat Ward under the Sikkim Labour Protection Act, 2005 for the purpose of detailed data collection of unorganised/individual workers and their registration.
Government believes this move is significant achievement of the State government in ensuring a complete database of the labour force, and their overall welfare. Format for collecting data for individual workers domestic helper have already prepared and while explaining the definition of labour or rather who will need to register themselves then minister said “every individual workers or porters, carpenters, masons, rag picker, quilt maker, plumbers, fitters, cooks, waiters, chanawalas electricians, welders, mechanic, barbers, cobblers, welders, hawkers, umbrella repairers, scrap paper and bottle collectors etc who are working independently shall have to register themselves .
Minister also said there will be registration fee for labourers after that they will get labour card and they need to renew it yearly this will also help the government for revenue generation.
