Genome sequencing report for Omicron yet to arrive: Sonam Gyaltsen Bhutia, State IEC Officer

As the number of Covid- 19 Sikkim infection is climbing day by day but health   department is not aware whether it is Omicron or not.  Sonam Gyaltsen Bhutia, State IEC Officer today in an interview with one local channel told “we don’t know the present infection is Omicron or not as the report for sample of genome sequencing have not yet arrived which was sent to New Delhi so we cannot say whether it is Omicron or not but in earlier genome sequencing there were reports of Delta variant so we have to wait for report.

He also said even though the report have not yet arrived but people are coming to hosptial with the symptoms which are similar to Omicron that is sore of throat, fever, headache and diarrhoea in some case so we are doubtful that the surge in cases is due to Omicron only informed Bhutia. 

Must tell, Sikkim recorded 368 Corona infections from the 1237 samples tested on Wednesday. The State’s Covid positivity rate was 29.7%, informed the Health department.

The district-wise Covid report was 243 cases in east district, 68 cases in west district, 50 cases in south district and seven cases in north district.

With 305 recoveries on Wednesday, there are now 2439 active Covid cases in Sikkim. Among them, 12 patients are showing moderate symptoms while 19 patients have reported severe symptoms.

Two more deaths were reported, one each at STNM Hospital and Singtam hospital. So far, eight Covid patients have passed away this month. The Covid death toll in Sikkim has reached 417, informed the Health department.

At present there are 113 Covid patients admitted in hospitals here. Among them, 18 patients are in the ICU, informed the Health department.
