Gangtok, May 30:
In an anomalous way, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung was brought to the new STNM Hospital, Gangtok for medical treatment on Monday afternoon. He had been referred to the State-run hospital of Sikkim by Darjeeling hospital after his condition deteriorated following a five-day hunger strike.
Bimal Gurung’s fifth day of hunger strike on Sunday was marked by high drama as leaders of his party, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, held a meeting with visiting BJP leaders and its hill allies in Darjeeling.
When it was asked Privardan Rai, AGS, GJM Central Committee why they choose to bring the Morcha leader Bimal Gurung to Sikkim instead of Siliguri as there are many multi-specialty hospitals which is near also then he replied because of the deep relation that Sikkim and Darjeeling shares we have brought and now Sikkim also has multi-specialty hospital so we brought him here.
When it was asked does this mean GJM don’t trust West Bengal Government then he said it’s not that “we can take him to the biggest hospital-like Appollo also but we find Sikkim close so we brought him here and Sikkim also has a good hospital now and over the year many patients are visiting Sikkim for treatment?.
The reason for dharna was demanded such as provisions in the 2011 GTA memorandum of the agreement be implemented in letter and spirit and 396 Mouzass from plains be included within the GTA before elections are held. Gurung was hospitalized after he lifted his five-day-long dharna yesterday on medical grounds as his health was deteriorating rapidly.
But still, the question lingers why is Sikkim leaving aside the best hospitals in Siliguri and the capital Kolkota or this is more than what appears to be some big political development awaiting or there are some political reasons too only time will tell.
